Open source

What is Alfresco?

Alfresco is an enterprise content management (ECM) platform - a document management system at its heart. First released in 2005 and today part of Hyland, it stores, versions, secures and searches your documents at scale.

  • Community Edition - open source under the LGPLv3 license
  • 20 years in production - first released in 2005
  • Backed by Hyland - a global content-services vendor

Open source at its core

Alfresco Community Edition is open source under the LGPLv3 license - the content repository, content model, REST API and CMIS support are publicly available on GitHub. The Enterprise Edition is a separate commercial product.

A rock-solid, standards-based architecture

Alfresco cleanly separates content, metadata and search - a proven design that has run document repositories at billion-document scale. Everything is reachable through open, industry-standard interfaces.

CMIS · OASIS standard REST API BPMN workflows · Activiti Records mgmt · ISO 16175
Open standards mean no lock-in: your content stays accessible through documented, industry-standard interfaces - not a proprietary black box.
Efficient

Runs lean, scales when you need it

Alfresco runs as a standard Java application - Apache Tomcat with a PostgreSQL database and a Solr search index. You install it straight onto a single Linux server, so a small team can run a complete repository on one modest VPS.

  • Standard server stack - Tomcat (JVM), PostgreSQL and Solr search; no container orchestration required.
  • Official Ansible deployment - Alfresco's own Ansible playbook provisions the whole stack on a plain Linux host.
  • Proven in the real world - we run Alfresco Community as a native install on a compact Linux vServer: reliable, low-maintenance, cost-efficient.
Production and enterprise workloads benefit from more resources - sizing depends on your document volume and number of users.
